How Puty Puar is leading climate action in Indonesia through creative advocacy
Puty Puar, an illustrator, author, and climate advocate from Jakarta, is making waves in Indonesia by mainstreaming the conversation around climate issues. Through her work, especially her children’s books on climate action, she’s created unexpected platform for engaging the public—particularly mothers—on environmental matters.
What began as a personal mission to empower Indonesian mothers has evolved into a national movement. After completing The Good Chat fellowship, Puty discovered that her books—initially intended to educate children—are sparking far more attention among adults, especially parents. Puty realized that by bringing the book into the conversation, she could open doors to deeper discussions on climate change in Indonesia, air pollution, and the energy transition.
"This book isn’t just for kids; it’s primarily for parents," Puty reflects, recognizing that by engaging parents, she is creating a ripple effect that will ultimately shape how future generations approach climate issues.
Starting in January, Puty's books will be distributed and taught in schools across Indonesia. Through her creative work and persistent advocacy, Puty is showing that climate action in Indonesia doesn’t have to be complex—it can start with a conversation, and it can start in the home.
