How a marketing career took a green turn with Maren Marasigan
Hi, I’m Maren! I work in communications, digital marketing, and analytics in the development sector, specifically with Jobs that makesense Asia. To be honest, I never imagined I’d end up working in the climate or sustainability space. Like many fresh graduates, I was just trying to find a job.
Sure, I had internships and academic projects with NGOs, social enterprises, and community organizations in the Philippines during university, but I saw them as temporary. I bought into the mindset that there’s no money in the nonprofit world, so I didn’t consider it a viable long-term path. But here I am.
Every day, I’m still learning what it means and what it takes to build a meaningful career in the development sector. Of course, financial stability matters. But there’s a different kind of fulfillment when your work creates impact, not just for the planet but also for people navigating complex systems and trying to live better lives.
At first, I thought digital marketing was just about putting content online, especially after studying it during the pandemic when everything felt disconnected. But I’ve come to see it as something deeper: a tool for building trust, nurturing community, and moving missions forward.
By facilitating events, listening to people’s stories, and meeting them where they are, I’ve found myself expanding too. As an introvert, those real-life connections grounded me and challenged me in ways no screen ever could. Facilitating these conversations has helped me enrich my approach to digital marketing—from focusing on promotions to creating meaningful spaces where people can reflect on their careers and values.

This approach continues to guide my content strategy. This is where sustainability began to take on a new meaning for me, not just as a concept or career path, but as a lens for understanding the kind of impact I want to help create.
It wasn’t just about environmental work. It became about redefining what a “good job” looks like, how work can be restorative instead of extractive. How it can care for people as much as it does for the planet. How being an ally to those who feel lost is still valid, even when you don’t have it all figured out either.
I used to think you needed everything sorted out by your mid-20s. Now that I’m 25, I know better. I’m still in the process of becoming. But I’ve fallen in love with that in-between space, the freedom to explore, to be curious, to move toward purpose without needing all the answers.
So if you're someone who's unsure, exploring, or just starting out, know this: You don’t have to have it all figured out. Sometimes, the path becomes clear after you start walking. And sometimes, what you thought was “just a job” becomes your way of shaping the world.
