Connecting Southeast Asia’s insights on renewable energy jobs—Watt’s Next campaign
The Watt’s Next campaign hosted a series of events across the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia, uniting local experts and participants to explore renewable energy and green jobs. These discussions offered valuable insights into the clean energy transition, highlighting shared challenges and opportunities across Southeast Asia.
Inclusivity and skill diversity in green careers
Green jobs welcome diverse talents from all walks of life—a message emphasized across all events. In Thailand, Muandao “Keaw” Kongwanarat stressed that the renewable energy sector thrives on inclusivity and benefits from people with varied skills and experiences. Supporting this, Hannah Alcoseba Fernandez in the Philippines pointed out that breaking into the sector doesn’t require a technical background—what’s vital is staying informed, continuously learning, and building confidence through accessible resources like seminars and online content.
This theme of inclusivity extended to Indonesia, where Rizky from HiRE Indonesia highlighted the importance of clear communication in recruitment, encouraging job seekers to articulate how their unique skills can contribute to sustainability goals. The collective insights from these events remind us that green careers aren’t just for engineers or scientists—they are for anyone ready to make a difference.
Driving innovation and building a sustainable future
Throughout the campaign, speakers underscored the importance of embracing bold ideas and forward-thinking solutions. Ping Mendoza in the Philippines described solar energy as the cheapest and most impactful way to create value for the country, calling for innovative approaches to harness its potential. Similarly, Chairiman in Indonesia shared his inspiring career shift from oil and gas to renewables, reflecting the growing realization that the future lies in sustainable energy.
At the same time, participants explored the broader implications of the green transition. In Indonesia, Mariska Yasrie emphasized the need to align economic growth with environmental sustainability, while Tonic Madulid in the Philippines pointed out how climate crises exacerbate energy challenges, urging systemic change. These insights highlight the intersection of clean energy, economic development, and climate action.
Building a community of changemakers
The Watt's Next campaign revealed that the transition to renewable energy is as much about people as it is about technology. From Thailand’s MJ, who inspired participants to excel in their craft and connect with mission-driven organizations, the events showcased the power of community in driving meaningful change.
By fostering connections and creating spaces for dialogue, the campaign empowered participants to see themselves as part of a collective effort to reshape Southeast Asia’s energy landscape.
