➔ Description of the mission

The Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) collaborates with governments, financial institutions, and businesses to drive economic growth and development while mitigating climate change and addressing climate risks. CPI helps to promote and improve the climate-related policies in the country, with a particular focus on finance. CPI is a dynamic organization, with a global reach and an entrepreneurial culture. CPI is present in countries that provide the most potential for policy impact, including Brazil, Europe, India, Indonesia, South Africa, and the United States.

CPI works smartly to maintain an idea-driven, collaborative environment across all our teams. In Indonesia, CPI partners with relevant ministries to understand, develop, and adjust policies and mechanisms that encourage the transition to a green economy and climate-conscious financial industry. In efforts to accelerate green investment, particularly in the energy sector, CPI works with the government and public, and private financing institutions.

Based in Jakarta, Indonesia, CPI seeks to appoint a

LEGAL CONSULTANT

The Legal Consultant will work in CPI Indonesia under the mentorship of a Senior Analyst. The consultant will be given an opportunity to work on selected projects in CPI Indonesia that firstly require some degree of legal analysis, and that secondly relate to (corporate or project) financing issues. The project he/she is assigned to contributes directly to CPI Indonesia’s effort in promoting policies in Indonesia that are supportive of the climate change mitigation and adaptation agenda, particularly from the financial perspective.

About getting the daily tasks and reviews, the consultant should coordinate with the Project Manager of the project he/she is assigned to. However, about seeking the overall learning guidance during this fellowship program, the consultant should consult with the Senior Analyst who mentors him/her.

This role is part of the Climate Finance Fellowship, a 12-month program designed to bridge the talent gap in the climate finance sector. The Fellowship supports mid-career finance professionals who are looking to transition into purpose-driven, climate-focused work—particularly within nonprofit and civil society organizations across the Global South. Fellows are placed within high-impact host organizations, where they take on a core finance or strategy role. In addition to this placement, Fellows join a cohort-based learning journey that includes:

  • Tailored climate and leadership development modules
  • One-on-one coaching and mentorship
  • Peer learning and community exchange
  • Access to professional networks in climate and development

The Fellowship is led by Surge Climate Talent (SCT), with program design and implementation managed by Global Good x Amani (GG x Amani), an impact consulting and leadership development firm. Together, SCT and GG x Amani are working to ensure that host organizations are supported, Fellows are set up for success, and the program contributes meaningfully to strengthening the climate finance ecosystem.

This opportunity is especially suited for professionals from the private or public sectors with strong finance experience who may not yet have worked in climate or nonprofit contexts. It is also open to those currently in the nonprofit sector seeking to specialize in climate finance.

Key responsibilities for the Legal Consultant will include:

  • To perform solid legal and regulatory analysis on the climate-related policies, particularly those having financial impacts on Indonesia’s financial industry and climate projects.
  • To evaluate the legal and regulatory constraints with which the project financing and corporate financing in climate projects in Indonesia should comply.
  • To interact with policymakers and other stakeholders to conduct joint analysis, communicate research findings effectively, and/or ensure that the undertaken analysis is policy-relevant.
  • To co-produce high-quality CPI products, including full reports, executive summaries, blogs, and presentations.
  • To assist with a range of project management and administrative responsibilities, including organizing meetings and public-facing engagements (i.e., workshops, FGDs).
  • To communicate and collaborate with CPI staff in Indonesia and around the globe.
