Carbon Technical Specialist

CIX is looking for a Carbon Technical Specialist to help assess the quality of Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) carbon credits and their underlying projects across all project types. This is a part of CIX’s commitment to quality. You will play a crucial role in evaluating the quality of carbon credit projects as well as building new assessment frameworks by project type. Strong analytical skills, carbon finance and/or background in a particular project type, interdisciplinary thinking, and ability to work independently are critical for this position. A commercial understanding of the drivers of the VCM preferred, but not required.

This role is ideally based in Singapore or London and will report directly to the Head of Marketplace & Auction, with a dotted line to the Carbon Markets Director

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Carbon Markets Director to conduct comprehensive interdisciplinary integrated technical analyses of VCM carbon credit projects and identify key risks for carbon technical, environmental and social Safeguards, operations, policy, etc risks associated with a particular project type. CIX’s assessment framework will be used to conduct assessments. Majority of projects encompass Verra VCS or Gold Standard or CAR
  • Develop new project type assessment frameworks as needed and keep existing ones updated
  • Conduct literature searches to identify relevant information for assessments and assessment framework
  • Provide technical and business development support to origination team for project sourcing
  • Maintain and continue to improve the CIX Quality Assessment Framework in collaboration with Carbon Markets Director
  • Write project assessment analyses as per CIX template, as well as other documentation as needed (e.g the CIX website
  • Periodically update CIX’s Paper on Approach to Carbon Credit Quality and Integrity as needed
  • Partner with Origination team to address technical inquries from prospect project developer
  • Draft IAC presentations as needed for new project type carbon credit approvals or quality related matters
  • Develop training materials on carbon finance tailored for internal staff in collaboration with the Carbon Markets Director
  • Represent CIX to participate in local market speaking engagements which inform and educate on CIX quality and project offerin
  • Share expertise within the organization and contribute to CIX’s thought leadershi
Profile

Requirements

  • 2-5 years of relevant work experience assessing VCM carbon credit projects is strongly preferred, but not required
  • Prior operations, project management, or risk management experience in developing countries in forestry, waste management, clean cookstoves, biochar, or soil carbon is plus
  • Open to fresh graduates in the fields of climate change, especially Natural Climate Solutions satellite imagery within context of carbon finance, along with commercial acumen
  • Knowledge of how to apply World Bank environmental and social Safeguards is a plus
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resources management, forestry, engineering, geography, business administration and finance, or any other relevant fields
  • Interdisciplinary thinking abilities is a must
  • Excellent research and analytical skills, with a keen eye for details
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively across different time zones
  • Inherent curiosity and a commitment to maintaining up-to-date knowledge in the fie
