➔ Description of the mission

Job Purpose:

We are looking for a Marine Research Officer (MRO) to join our team and support our marine conservation efforts. The MRO will be fully integrated in the scientific department of CRCP and report to the conservation manager. As such, the most important portion of its time and mission will be focused on research field work (such as coral reef biophysical monitoring, Marine Protected Areas’s effectiveness assessment, Seagrass and Mangroves mapping, etc) followed by periods of data analysis, report writing and scientific communications.

The position is ideal for marine biology graduate looking to apply its skills and work for the conservation of coastal resources. CRCP is looking for a positive, dynamic and meticulous individual who loves research and field work. It requires physical fitness, endurance, able to work actively and undertake physical labour in outdoor marine conditions. The MRO will be joining a small team of enthusiastic and driven individuals working towards the protection of some of the most threatened places in the world. You will be applying your skills to support marine conservation efforts in the Philippines.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Marine Research and Monitoring (1/3)

  • Carrying underwater biophysical monitoring data collection activities (via snorkeling and scuba diving) coral reef composition, health and resilience and assessing Marine Protected Areas (MPA)’s effectiveness following CRCP’s scientific methodology.
  • Seagrass bed and mangroves mapping and species identification
  • Carrying research projects to gather additional data on local use of coastal resources and pressures on its ecosystems (such as water quality and pollution, reef sounds, typhoon impacts, etc.)
  • Carrying beach / reef / mangroves clean up activities and waste monitoring
  • Participation in data analysis (assisting or leading, depending per project) and report writing

Scientific communication (2/3)

  • Contributing to the publication of scientific manuscripts
  • Leading presentations with relevant stakeholders to communicate results of CRCP’s research.
  • Building relationships and partnerships with relevant Marine Research organizations (such as Universities, Academia, other NGOs) in the Philippines to communicate and exchange about research to strengthen CRCP’s conservation outputs. This may include assisting and or presenting in conferences.

Assisting other CRCP projects and events (3/3)

  • When time allows and it doesn’t conflict with MRO’s main mission
  • Assisting CRCP’s community outreach activities
  • Assisting teaching CRCP’s volunteers program

➔ Profile

Your skills and expertise

Essential:

  • Filipino citizen
  • Fluent in English and Tagalog
  • A degree in marine biology, environmental science or related field
  • Data analysis and visualization experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including public speaking
  • Experience conducting marine research and coral reef monitoring
  • Capable of working with a team of different backgrounds and cultures
  • Capable of working independently, lead projects and report to manager
  • Ability to swim and comfortably snorkel
  • Scuba diver license or willing to become a scuba diver
  • Capable of swimming long distances, carry scuba tanks, and conduct field work in
  • sometimes challenging marine outdoor conditions (sun, waves, heat, mud, etc.)
  • Passion for the marine environment and in inspiring to protect it
  • Professional, Rigorous, Detail minded

Desirable

  • Knowledge in marine ecology and marine species identification in the Philippines (fish, corals, mangroves, seagrass, etc.)
  • Previous experience working in an NGO
  • Previous scientific publications
  • Being positive, dynamic, ready to inspire and share CRCP’s advocacy
  • Active driving license, able to drive a small truck and/or a motorbike (automatic or manual)
