Description of the mission

About the role

The Sr. Biodiversity Officer is responsible for delivering biodiversity monitoring activities independently and reliably at the project site. The role focuses on taking end-to-end responsibility for defined field data collection outputs, consistently following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and escalating exceptions or unfamiliar risks to support biodiversity reporting. The officer is responsible for the quality of their own deliverables, applying judgment to variations within known frameworks. While job duties entail a variety of flora and fauna surveys, the successful candidate will have a strong background in botany/plant taxonomy and willingness to become an expert in animal identification as well.

Key Responsibilities

Biodiversity Monitoring & Field Implementation

  • Independently deliver assigned biodiversity monitoring activities in accordance with approved monitoring plans, taking end-to-end responsibility for defined outputs.
  • Lead vegetation surveys in peat swamps and other Sumatran lowland forests, collecting high quality biomass data and botanical voucher specimens as needed. Strong taxonomic knowledge is essential.
  • Conduct additional field surveys with team support, which include: camera trap deployment for mammal monitoring, point count transects for bird monitoring, bioacoustics surveys, and other opportunistic biodiversity monitoring.
  • Monitor High Conservation Value (HCV) areas.
  • Follow established methodologies, safety protocols, and monitoring schedules consistently, applying judgment to routine but non-identical cases in the field.
  • Identify issues and variations early during monitoring activities, resolving routine challenges independently, and escalate exceptions or unfamiliar risks to the Science & Impact Team or supervisor.

Data Management & Documentation

  • Perform accurate data entry of field observations, taking responsibility for the quality of deliverables before further review and analysis by the Science & Impact team.
  • Update species inventories using collected field data.
  • Ensure assigned field documentation is complete, organized, and reliably delivered on time to avoid negative impacts on team deliverables or timelines.

Operational Support

  • Operate patrol monitoring tools and software independently within guidelines for standard field data collection.
  • Provide regular, reliable updates to supervisors regarding field progress, proactively identifying known problems early to mitigate moderate operational risks.

Compliance & Safety

  • Strictly adhere to wildlife safety protocols and fieldwork safety standards at all times.
  • Participate in relevant technical training and capacity-building initiatives.

Profile

Requirements - Technical Skill

  1. Solid understanding and practical experience in field biodiversity monitoring techniques (camera traps, vegetation plots, and/or bird surveys).
  2. Ability to independently and reliably collect, process, and manage field data.
  3. Proficient species identification (flora and fauna) relevant to project landscapes. A botany background is essential.
  4. Proficient spatial awareness, including reading maps and GPS use.
  5. Working knowledge of High Conservation Value (HCV) frameworks.
  6. Strict adherence to health, safety, and wildlife protocols.

Requirements - Soft Skill

  1. Operational Discipline: Delivers work independently and reliably with strong attention to detail. Follows SOPs consistently and can be trusted to deliver.
  2. Field Coordination: Takes end-to-end responsibility for field schedules in remote or challenging environments, demonstrating reliable and predictable performance.
  3. Communication: Clear reporting for routine field updates, identifying issues early to supervisors and the S&I team. Basic English skills are desirable.
  4. Team Support: Collaborative mindset when working with field teams.
  5. Safety & Responsibility: High awareness of field safety and wildlife risks. Makes routine, low-risk decisions and escalates unfamiliar issues to supervisors.
  6. Decision Making: Works independently within SOPs, applies judgment to routine but non-identical cases, and escalates exceptions or unfamiliar risks to supervisors.
