Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Purpose.

Conceptual.

  • Drive the development and execution of our Zero Waste campaign strategy that is deeply rooted in audience research and engagement principles. Focus on crafting campaigns that resonate with our audiences values, encouraging them to experience and recognize the impact of their activism through tangible successes.
  • Collaborate with Fundraising team to co-create opportunities for our audience to meaningfully participate in the zero waste campaign, contributing to the breadth and depth of Greenpeace Malaysia’s Integrated Supporter Journey.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of political, legislature, regulatory and economic frameworks relevant to the zero waste campaign, engage diverse stakeholders in the spaces of power to co-create a plastic free future.

Applied

  • Participate and lead in campaign discussion, planning and implementation of campaign strategies, event planning, media and communication strategies within Greenpeace Malaysia office, Greenpeace Southeast Asia (GPSEA), with other Greenpeace offices and with Greenpeace International (GPI). This will include both written and verbal discussions as well as attendance at specific meetings.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of technical information related to zero waste, plastics and sustainable food and be able to present the information to a variety of audiences within and outside Malaysia.
  • Collaborate with engagement and fundraising teams to deliver compelling narratives and meaningful interventions that connect with and mobilise our shared country audience by aligning with their intrinsic motivations and demonstrating real-world outcomes.

2. Engagement.

Internal.

  • Participate in regular progress reviews and evaluations of the campaign-related projects and activities, to refine and enhance the reach and effectiveness of campaigns. Use insights from ongoing audience research to adapt strategies.
  • Coordinate information flow within the Greenpeace Malaysia team and supporters, the zero waste movement, and with relevant Greenpeace International units and national regional offices.
  • Work with Public Engagement Team to organise and oversee the work of campaign volunteers, interns and external contractors when directed.

External.

  • Act as spokesperson and face of the campaign, represent Greenpeace and the campaign on online channels and at relevant national and regional public events, activist meetings/groups, and gatherings of political decision makers, local citizens and other affected communities.
  • Consistently update and maintain a strong grasp of technical information, ensuring you can effectively communicate complex concepts in clear, accessible language to diverse audiences.
  • Engage in critical national and regional political and other fora relevant to the campaign.
  • Develop pro-active relationships with relevant media to increase campaign outreach as spokesperson.
  • Collaborate with the communications focal points to develop your projects engagement strategies. Assist in preparing media, offline and online materials relevant to the campaign, including social media posts, video content, national press releases, op-eds, Q&As, brochures, briefing papers, reports, blogs, etc, and provide assistance in the formulation of regional and international materials when necessary.
  • Lead the development of and Direct, organise and participate in non-violent, creative direct actions that resonate with our audience to support and advance campaign goals

3. Delivery.

Timeliness.

  • Keep the Senior Programme Manager informed of activities in the campaign (including preparation of long term plans, monthly reports and monthly work plans) and recommend changes in tactics, or strategies if necessary.
  • Respond in a timely manner to and engage in internal as well as pressing external regional challenges as determined by Senior Programme Manager beyond their normal issue/campaign area as circumstances require.

Quality.

  • Ensure all campaign initiatives are of high quality, resonate with target audiences, and are executed within the relevant political, legislative, and economic frameworks.
  • Spearhead non-violent direct actions that highlight and celebrate both small and significant victories, enhancing public perception and support for the campaign.
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested or assigned by the Senior Programme Manager.
Profile

Job Requirement:

  • Level of Education: Bachelor or degree with equivalent experience.
  • Field of Study: Environmental Science, Sociology, Economics, Politics, Psychology, Communication or other related fields.
  • Work Experience: At least 3 years of work experience in community and/or urban campaigns.

Organization Competencies:

i. Professionalism:

  • Knowledge and/or experience in managing conduct and emotions in a way that represents the values and realizes the objectives of the organization.
  • Experience/expertise working on plastics, food, solid waste, environmental and social issues is an advantage.
  • Proven experience in project management, open campaigning, mass mobilization, public speaking, activist training, strategic planning and organizing people around an issue.
  • Proven experience in directing a project from conception to completion.

ii. Strategic Perspective and Mindset:

  • Knowledge and/or experience in addressing organizational objectives by developing calculated approaches that integrate an openness to and awareness of diversity across cultures.
  • iii. Team Work and Communication:
  • Knowledge and/or experience in working with others and presenting information, ideas, and positions in a clear manner that can easily be understood across diverse and multi-cultural audiences.
  • iv. Innovation and Change:
  • Knowledge and/or experience in addressing organizational objectives by developing calculated approaches that integrate an openness to and awareness of diversity across cultures.

Skills Requirement:

Functional Skills.

  • Knowledge and/or experience on environmental and social impacts of climate change and the science behind it.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in project management tools and methodologies, risk assessment, project budget managements, monitoring and reporting.
  • Knowledge/or experience in environmental activism.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in lobbying to influence targeted people of power.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in planning and conducting primary field research.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in developing, delivering and evaluating campaign strategies and tactics.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in building networks for partnership development and outreach.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in speaking to media as a spokesperson.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in analyzing, planning, developing and managing the implementation of Zero waste, plastics and sustainable food campaigns strategies.
  • Commitment to creative, non-violent direct action as a means of affecting changes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team but also to work independently and unsupervised.
  • Willingness to travel.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong skills in written and spoken Bahasa Malaysia and English. Proficiency of a commonly-used language in Malaysia is a merit.
  • Preferred skills include experience in key program areas: public speaking, activist training, strategic planning and organizing people around an issue.
  • Experience in Zero waste, plastics and sustainable food issues.
