Description of the mission

The Role - Head of Product Design L

ocation: Open for Bangalore or Jakarta based applicant, with occasional field and country visits

This is a senior design leadership role for someone who is equally comfortable setting vision and rolling up their sleeves. You will be the first dedicated design leader at Rize — owning the craft, the system, and the culture of design across a complex, multi-surface product. You will lead two existing product designers and collaborate daily with Product Managers and Engineers to ship a platform used by field agronomists in rice paddies, operations coordinators in offices, and country managers making decisions from dashboards. This is not a role for someone who wants to hand off briefs and wait. It's for someone who thinks in systems, moves fast, and cares deeply about the person on the other end of the screen — whether that's a farmer, an agronomist, or an operations analyst.

Our Product Surfaces (Your Canvas)

  • Mobile app (Android): the primary tool for agronomists and field coordinators. Used in rural areas with poor connectivity, on mid-range devices. Task execution, check-ins, farmer data collection, AWD monitoring
  • Web console (React + TypeScript + Ant Design): the operations and management layer. Ticket management, collections tracking, the NOC (Network Operations Center), approvals, and oversight. Complex, information-dense, enterprise-grade UX.
  • WhatsApp channel: farmer-facing communication surface. Conversational flows for farmers with varying literacy and digital fluency
  • AI & data interfaces: emerging surfaces for remote sensing alerts, anomaly detection, and AI-assisted decision support. The design frontier at Rize.

What you will own (Responsibilities)

  1. Design leadership + team
  • Lead, mentor, and grow two product designers — setting a clear quality bar and creating the conditions for their best work
  • Establish the design culture at Rize: how we run discovery, critique, hand off, and measure quality
  • Be the voice of design in product planning and company-level discussions — a strategic peer to the CPO and engineering leads
  1. Product discovery + research
  • Drive user research alongside PMs — field visits, agronomist interviews, ops team shadowing, farmer feedback synthesis
  • Translate complex operational workflows into clear, intuitive user flows. This requires understanding the business deeply before touching the canvas
  • Identify the highest-leverage design interventions: where confusion costs field efficiency, where a better flow reduces bad debt, where a redesigned dashboard saves an ops manager two hours a day
  1. Design systems + craft quality
  • Own and evolve the Rize design system in Figma — components, tokens, interaction patterns, and documentation
  • Define and uphold the visual language across all surfaces, ensuring consistency from an Android phone in a rice paddy to an ops dashboard in an office
  • Set the standard for interaction quality: accessibility, performance-aware design, offline-first thinking
  1. Multi-surface design execution
  • Lead design for the most complex product areas — the Operations Console, the NOC, MRV/carbon data flows — working hands-on where needed
  • Design for constraint: low-connectivity environments, mid-range Android hardware, users with varying digital fluency, and enterprise complexity on the ops side.
  • Partner with engineering to ensure design intent survives implementation — spec reviews, component reviews, and a healthy feedback loop with developers.
  1. AI + emerging interface design
  • Shape how Rize designs AI-assisted surfaces: anomaly queues, satellite-derived alerts, AI-suggested actions, and human-override patterns
  • Develop intuition for where AI can reduce cognitive load vs. where explicit human confirmation is needed — and design the right affordances for each

Profile

Who you are (Requirements)

Must-haves

  • 5+ years of product design experience, including at least 1–2 years in a senior or lead capacity.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates both UX rigor (research, flows, information architecture) and UI craft (visual design, design systems, interaction design).
  • Experience designing complex operational or enterprise products — you understand dense data, role-based interfaces, and workflows with many steps and exception paths.
  • Figma power user — components, auto-layout, prototyping, and handoff.
  • Excellent communicator: you can explain a design decision to an engineer, a business rationale to a PM, and a concept to a field agronomist — and you know which language to use when.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity: at Rize, you will often define the problem before designing the solution.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience designing for emerging markets — low-connectivity constraints, varying literacy, Android-first environments.
  • Both mobile (Android) and web product design experience.
  • Experience building or evolving a design system from scratch.
  • Exposure to AI product design — interfaces that surface model outputs, manage uncertainty, and build user trust.
  • Experience working across Southeast Asia or India, or equivalent multicultural distributed environments.
  • Familiarity with field operations, logistics, fintech, or agriculture-adjacent products.
