Background

The Shoal Co. is a systems strategy and facilitation consultancy that partners with mission-led organizations to navigate complexity, strengthen collaboration, and unlock collective potential. We use participatory systems mapping, social arts, and research-backed tools to help teams uncover hidden dynamics, build trust, and co-create pathways toward just and regenerative outcomes. Clients include family foundations, philanthropic intermediaries, social enterprises and government agencies.

This engagement combines two streams:

  1. Seeds of Change – an SG Eco Fund-supported public workshop series building systems thinking and futures literacy to address Singapore's environmental challenges. The programme engages non-profits, social enterprises, and ground-up initiatives through real-world case studies.
  2. Systems Mapping Project/s – one or more regional research projects that apply systems thinking to understand why environmental problems persist, across themes that could span climate action, biodiversity conservation and social justice. See example of a previous project here. You will contribute literature review, interview analysis, and hands-on stakeholder and causal loop mapping on one or two live projects, depending on what is running during the period of your engagement.

We are seeking a freelance consultant to provide support across both programme coordination/content and research/systems mapping work.

Scope of Services

1. Seeds of Change – Programme Coordination & Content

  • Liaise with casegivers and partner organizations on preparation needs
  • Draft short-form content reflecting workshop themes (systems thinking, futures literacy, community-led environmental action) for social media
  • Translate workshop discussions into brief reflections, learning summaries, or social media posts
  • Capture on-site photographs and short-form videos; deliver curated media sets
  • Support basic consent/release processes for media

2. Systems Mapping Research

  • Support literature and desk review on the assigned project's focus area (recent themes include wildlife trade and responsible energy transition in South-east Asia)
  • Analyse qualitative data from stakeholder interviews, synthesising key themes and systemic patterns
  • Contribute to the systems mapping process, including building out maps and diagrams in Kumu

Engagement & Budget

  • Part-time (minimum 2 days a week) or full-time
  • Up to SGD 1000/month (pro-rated for part-time engagement); payment will be based on hours worked
  • From end Nov 2026 onwards, ideally till April 2027 or longer
  • Engagement as a freelance/vendor arrangement
