VFlowTech is a Singapore headquartered company focused on developing and manufacturing long duration energy storage systems specializing in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB). Established in 2018, VFlowTech focuses on developing safe, scalable, and sustainable energy storage solutions that address the intermittency challenges of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power and are designed for various applications, including utility-scale projects, microgrids, and off-grid solutions. VFlowTech's unique IP and innovative approach emphasizes eco-friendly and cost-effective battery technology with long operational lifespans of more than 25 years and addresses issues of performance degradation, thermal runaway, and product reliability and safety, while being fully recyclable at end of life. The company has installed their long duration storage systems in over 10 countries globally and has a vision to drive the world towards energy equity where everyone can access clean energy at affordable pricing.

Profile

VFlowTech is excited to offer a PhD scholarship under the Industrial Postgraduate Programme, a fully funded initiative by the Singapore Economic Development Board and Enterprise Singapore. This program provides aspiring researchers with the opportunity to address critical challenges in Vanadium Redox Flow Battery technology, focusing on mitigating shunt currents, reducing losses, and enhancing system reliability and efficiency. Candidates will be full-time employees of VFlowTech while pursuing their PhD at Newcastle University (UK).

The research project aims to develop a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) by integrating flow battery and lithium-ion battery technologies into a single microgrid solution. The candidate will contribute to hardware development and advanced control algorithm creation, optimizing performance, efficiency, and reliability. This prestigious program offers a unique opportunity to drive innovation in energy storage systems.

Responsibilities:

Design and Simulation of Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS):

  • Determine suitable battery chemistries and sizes for the HESS.
  • Conduct simulation tests and analyze initial results to ensure optimal design and functionality.

Development and testing of HESS Hardware:

  • Implement and integrate the simulated HESS design into the physical hardware.
  • Conduct intensive testing and validation of the HESS prototype to ensure performance standards are met.

Development of Energy Management System (EMS) Algorithm:

  • Develop a hybrid EMS to control and optimize the use of both battery technologies.
  • Implement smart charge and discharge control logic to enhance system efficiency, reliability, safety, cost-effectiveness, lifespan, and overall power and energy density.
  • Utilize state-of-the-art AI techniques to develop advanced EMS algorithms for efficient energy management.
