Purpose of Job

A senior managerial position, the purpose of this job is to provide guidance and interventions to shape and advance the themes and strategies of the Sarawak Conservation Programme. The job also requires a close working relationship and liaison with the Senior Manager (Landscapes), working in tandem towards making high conservation impacts; and to maintain good rapport and communicate well with partners within and outside of the organization and with Network partners in project implementation and monitoring.

The Senior Manager (Thematic) is expected to have experience in implementing landscape-scale strategy- or thematic- based conservation programmes; and is abreast with conservation needs and policy environment and opportunities in Sarawak. The job has a direct reporting line to the Head of Conservation (HoC) Sarawak with regards to the conservation programme in Sarawak.

Key Outputs

1. Effective implementation and results-based management and monitoring of the Sarawak Conservation Programme strategies including strategies designed under WWF Network offices and public sector partnerships, to deliver high impact outcomes. Specifically:

a. the Wildlife Conservation strategy (covering species and biodiversity).

b. High Conservation Value (HCV) and Forests strategy.

c. Forest Landscape Monitoring and CGIS.

2. Provide analysis, support and recommendations in matters of state policy and advocacy for conservation.

3. Engagements with stakeholders that deliver positive and cohesive conservation outcomes.

4. Documentation of reviews and monitoring for adaptive management measures.

5. Coordinate inputs and reviews from internal and external stakeholders on the implementation of the Sarawak Conservation Strategy.

Major Activities

1. To take part in the implementation of conservation projects, and to provide supervision and guidance to programme staff to achieve the planned deliverables according to workplan.

2. To provide management leadership to the programme in operational and administrative aspects for its effective implementation.

3. To analyze, support and advocate for matters relating to state policy that impacts forest, conservation, biodiversity.

4. Together with the Senior Manager (Landscapes):

a. do periodic reviews of the programme for prioritization of activities, to assess effectiveness of outputs, monitor outcomes and carry out adaptive management of the programme.

b. To organise and implement periodic meetings to take stock of progress on the ground, including

supervising and preparing Technical Progress Reporting or other relevant progress reports.

c. To provide technical inputs and solicit expert advice including review of literatures for making evidence- based decisions and achieving science-based conservation, including obtaining reviews and other technical inputs for the programme from peers within and outside of WWF-Malaysia.

5. To engage with the WWF network, government agencies, research institutions, collaborators, partners and other institutional stakeholders and coordinate joint activities for effective implementation of the programme.

6. To provide support in building staff technical and conservation capacities.

7. To enhance the funding of WWF-Malaysia’s conservation projects by working closely with Head of Conservation and Fundraising Department of WWF-Malaysia, and with the WWF network and other donors

8. To provide the Head of Conservation inputs in the preparation of documents for submission to the WWF- Malaysia’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT), Management Team, Executive Committee and Board of Trustees meetings.

9. Any other assignment assigned by your immediate supervisor from time to time.

Profile

Specifications

1. A graduate with related academic background or a degree related to conservation, environmental science, sustainable development or related study. A postgraduate degree from other discipline along with special training/diploma in conservation projects management and conservation science would also be considered suitable; having a Ph.D. would be an advantage.

2. At least eight (8) years of experience in conservation, environment and sustainable development programme. The last 2 years work at a managerial position and experience of advocacy and engagement work would be an advantage.

3. Excellent knowledge and commitment on the issues of conservation in Sarawak.

4. Excellent understanding of state policy and policy needs for conservation in Sarawak.

5. Excellent writing and speaking skills in Bahasa Malaysia and English. Being a well-versed communicator would be an advantage.

6. Must be computer literate and have the ability to use appropriate technology for presentation to partners, stakeholders and potential donors.

7. Excellent leadership, diplomatic and interpersonal skills.

8. Having a calm temperament, with a methodical and meticulous approach to work.

9. Must be able to work with minimal supervision, both in the field and in the office.

10. Organization and management skills are required.
