Purpose of the role

The Sustainable Finance Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing financial strategies to support sustainable development initiatives, with a particular focus on enhancing nature-positive financial mechanisms. This role involves assist in designing and managing financial models that align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles while fostering collaboration with key stakeholders, including financial institutions, regulatory bodies, and community organizations. The specialist will assess and map existing financial instruments, identify gaps, and propose innovative solutions to mobilize capital for sustainable projects.

A core component of the role includes assist in developing policy recommendations, assist in conducting feasibility assessments, and preparing technical reports to inform national and regional frameworks. The specialist will also play a central role in facilitating stakeholder engagement and knowledge-sharing to ensure that sustainable finance principles are embedded into long-term economic planning. This position requires working closely with cross-sector partners to drive the integration of sustainable finance into national policies and delivering practical solutions that address environmental and social challenges through financial innovation.

Key responsibilities

Research, Analysis, and Design

  • Conduct in-depth research on sustainable finance frameworks, including public and private sector mechanisms, and their applicability to environmental conservation in Thailand.
  • Analyze national and international financial policies to identify opportunities for integrating sustainable financing into Thailand’s Taxonomy Plan and broader environmental initiatives.
  • Design innovative financial models that align with Thailand’s green finance goals, focusing on mechanisms for resource mobilization, private sector engagement, and sustainable investment.
  • Assess and map current sustainable finance structures, including existing market conditions, to identify gaps and potential areas for improvement.
  • Formulate recommendations and strategic frameworks to strengthen Thailand’s green finance architecture, incorporating best practices and lessons learned from global initiatives.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including government agencies, financial institutions, and non-governmental organizations, to gather insights and validate research findings.
  • Support the development of tools and guidelines for sustainable finance implementation, ensuring alignment with national priorities and international standards.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and policy briefs to communicate research findings and recommendations to decision-makers and stakeholders.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented sustainable finance strategies, providing data-driven insights for continuous improvement.
  • External engagement with the finance sector and regulatory bodies
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, financial institutions, industry bodies, and international organizations.
  • Facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogues and workshops to gather insights, foster collaboration, and promote knowledge exchange.
  • Represent the organization in external forums, conferences, and meetings to advocate for sustainable finance and communicate project outcomes.
  • Engage with public and private sector partners to align financial initiatives with sustainability goals and regulatory frameworks.
  • Prepare policy briefs, reports, and communication materials to inform and influence external stakeholders on sustainable finance developments.

Fundraising

  • Identify potential funding opportunities and develop proposals to secure financial support for sustainable finance initiatives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with donors, philanthropic organizations, and funding agencies.
  • Develop compelling case studies and impact assessments to demonstrate project value and attract funding.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 8-12 years of experience in sustainable finance, market research, business development, and financial modelling, preferably in a development or environmental-focused organization.
  • Proven experience in connecting financial mechanisms with sustainable projects, especially in relation to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, sustainable finance and impact investment.
  • Experience in designing and implementing financial models that mobilize capital for sustainable initiatives, with a focus on nature-positive solutions.
  • Experience in policy development and feasibility assessments, particularly in the context of sustainable finance and environmental developmental frameworks.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate stakeholder engagement, including working with financial institutions, regulatory bodies, and community organizations to promote sustainable finance.
  • Experience in analyzing and mapping existing financial instruments, identifying gaps, and proposing innovative solutions to address financing challenges for sustainable development.

Required Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Proficiency in facilitating meetings, workshops, and training related to sustainable finance and investment solutions.
  • Strong background in agricultural, environmental, or related sectors, including experience in sustainable commodity markets and supply chain transparency initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-sector, including in finance, agriculture, and conservation, to ensure the integration of sustainable finance principles into national and regional frameworks.

Desirable

  • Proficiency in grant writing, fundraising, and project design, including experience in securing funding for sustainability initiatives.
  • Postgraduate degree in sustainable finance, environmental economics, business administration, or a closely related field.
  • Strong analytical and report-writing skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and clearly present findings.
  • An understanding of gender, equity and social inclusion topics, particularly as they relate to nature conservation, investment and leading

Additional requirements

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders including government, private sector, NGOs, and local communities.
  • Fluency in both Thai and English, with the ability to communicate effectively in both languages.
  • Willingness to travel within Thailand and internationally to coordinate project activities.
