Description of the mission

ABConservation (Arctictis Binturong Conservation) is the only organization in the world entirely dedicated to the study and protection of the binturong, Arctictis binturong, a mammal of Southeast Asia. Little known and little studied by scientists, everything remains to be done, and the challenge is ambitious! Founded in 2014, ABConservation is made up of international stakeholders whose vision is to ensure the survival, protection, and conservation of the binturong in the wild.

The organization has two headquarters — one in France and another in the Philippines — which determine the association’s strategy. Currently, ABConservation conducts several in situ and ex situ studies, organizes the World Binturong Day every year as well as other special events to raise awareness about the binturong, and works to fight against binturong trafficking.

Context:

The Executive Director leads the organization to help it fulfill its mission by providing excellent service to its members. He/she works in collaboration with the Board of Directors and the staff to ensure the organization’s long-term financial stability and to achieve its long-term goals. The Executive Director will be employed by ABConservation Foundation Inc. in the Philippines. He/she will be based in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, where the Binturong Study Program and an outreach and education program to raise awareness about the binturong are implemented.

Duties and Responsibilities

Distribution of effort in the following categories will change as necessary.

Strategic, leadership and management

  • Implement and maintain the strategic plan determined by the board of directors.
  • Provide inspirational leadership to the staff and volunteers to achieve the strategic goals; encourage skill development; and foster team growth.
  • Overview, coordinate, and monitor the NGO programs (scientific, education) led by the program managers to ensure the organization is meeting the expectations.
  • Conduct performance evaluations of the program managers.
  • Inform the Board of Directors in a timely manner of all matters affecting the organization’s situation and viability; provides regular communications and updates; and alerts the Board of Directors to any known potential problems within the organization or that could affect and/or jeopardize its mission.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between staff and the Board of Directors, fostering a culture centered on teamwork, honesty, integrity, communication, respect, and transparency.
  • Attend Board of Directors’ meetings and relevant committee meetings; proposes operational items to be included on the agenda for board meetings.

Fundraising

  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop and implement annual and long-term fund development plans; works with board, committees, and others on development activities; implements board-approved marketing/development plans.
  • Lead the financial committee of the NGO; Oversees fundraising activities with committee members.
  • Research grants and fundraising opportunities and works with program managers and board members to review and submit proposals; ensures complete recordkeeping, consistency in report preparation, language and style, and reviews and approves grant reporting from staff, board, and committee members.
  • Work with the board and committees to identify and pursue additional ways to secure appropriate funding (fundraising, grant applications…) for the NGO’s programs and administration.

Operations

  • Manage the administration of the foundation in the Philippines; Manage insurances, staff salaries, bills, and other regular payment related to the NGO’s regular operations.
  • Oversee the smooth running of local operations and oversee the acquisition and maintenance of ABConservation offices and equipment.
  • Act on behalf of the NGO in designated areas regarding contracts, donations, and other matters related to the local activities of the NGO; Monitor and renew the contracts and agreements.
  • Oversee all aspects of the organization’s operations and works collaboratively with staff to implement policies and ensure efficient and professional operations.
  • With the support and advising of an Attorney, regularly review operational policies to ensure compliance and drafts any new policies to be submitted to the Board of Directors for approval.

Financial

  • Supervise and oversee the foundation's finances.
  • Work with internal and external accountants to perform annual audits and prepare annual Financial Reports, with board assistance and approval processes.
  • Prepare an annual operating budget with the Board of Directors, Finance committee and concerned staff.
  • Provide updates to the Board in terms of actual spending against budget.

Partnership Relations

  • Represent ABConservation at public and professional meetings; Be the NGO’s primary spokesperson to partners, public institutions, general public, IP communities, and stakeholders.
  • Develop collaborations with agencies of similar missions, in the Philippines and internationally; expanding the network to foster growth and partnerships.

Job details:

Working hours and schedule:

  • Full time work, 7h a day, 35 hours per week.
  • Exceptional work on weekends or holidays is paid in accordance with Philippine law, and time off is compensated.
  • We observe national holidays (Philippines).

Salary:

  • 50,000.00 PHP minimum monthly salary.
  • Salary negotiable based on skills and experience.
  • PhilHealth, SSS and Pag-ibig is fully covered by ABConservation Foundation Inc.

Contract details:

  • Two-year, renewable.
  • Two-month probation period, renewable.

  • On-site, ABConservation Foundation Inc. office, Unit 15, Maria’s Apartment Building, Dagot Road, San Manuel, Puerto Princesa City, 5300, Palawan, Philippines

Profile

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • Seasoned executive including leadership positions within the non-profit sector and successful experience directing operations, personnel, finance, and programs; or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Experience or exposure to a variety of professional environments, including NGOs, environmental organizations, and government agencies. Experience in the wildlife conservation field is required.
  • Holds a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited university/college.
  • Filipino citizenship
  • Strong knowledge of local administration and legislation of the Philippines is highly desirable.
  • Must possess a demonstrated knowledge of organizational and financial procedures for non-profit organizations, human resource management, and strong leadership abilities.
  • Excellent computer skills, experience with risk management and communication skills.
  • The ability to evaluate and communicate program success through specific measures of desired outcomes.
  • Effective at managing and motivating staff while also holding them accountable. Demonstrated ability to build a team, mentor, coach, and train management level employees.
  • Demonstrated poise and grace under pressure; positive and energetic attitude.
  • Superior organizational and management skills--able to stay on top of countless details at once and move every project forward, maintaining organization's priorities.
  • An understanding of and demonstrated ability in systems, strategic, and analytical thinking.
  • Fluency in professional spoken and written English.
  • Comfortable speaking in public, at conferences, and partners meetings.
  • Must be able to meet and deal with the public in a tactful and diplomatic manner, communicate effectively, and be able to objectively evaluate problems and recommend appropriate actions.
  • Must be willing to work a schedule that includes some weekends and some travel.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and interest in animal welfare and wildlife conservation.
  • Highly collaborative, proactive, and flexible, self-directed, and solutions oriented.
