Description of the mission

ABConservation (Arctictis Binturong Conservation) is the only organization in the world entirely dedicated to the study and protection of the binturong, Arctictis binturong, a mammal of South and Southeast Asia. Currently classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN red list of threatened species, the binturong remains a little-known and understudied due to its elusive nature and arboreal lifestyle. Strengthening its conservation is a major challenge! Created in 2014, ABConservation is made up of international stakeholders whose vision is to ensure the survival, protection, and conservation of the binturong in the wild.

The organization is officially registered in France and the Philippines, where it conducts most of its activities. ABConservation’s activities fall under three main missions:

  • Improving knowledge about the ecology and behavior of wild binturongs in order to strengthen the conservation of populations and their habitats, and to optimize the management and welfare of binturongs in zoos.
  • Promoting the binturong to raise public awareness of the need to preserve it and increase the involvement of government agencies, communities, and younger generations.
  • Fighting against the trade of binturongs while encouraging collective efforts to change and improve laws and regulations relating to exotic animals and animal exploitation.
