What is makesense?

makesense is an international organisation working to accelerate just and equitable transitions across society.

We believe that addressing today's biggest social and environmental challenges, from climate change and biodiversity loss to growing inequalities, requires more than technological innovation. It requires people, organisations and institutions to work together to imagine, build and adopt new ways of living, working and collaborating.

Since 2010, makesense has been strengthening the capacity of citizens, civil society organisations, entrepreneurs, businesses and public institutions to become active contributors to these transitions. Today, our global team of more than 120 employees works across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Southeast Asia to design and implement programmes that create lasting systemic change.

In Southeast Asia, our mission is simple: to help build the new models our societies need while enabling more people to become part of the solution.

We do this through five complementary areas of work:

  • Impact Workforce Development: We help students, professionals and workers, including those from underserved communities, access meaningful careers that contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future. Through career platforms, learning programmes and employer partnerships, we are building the region's impact workforce.
  • Just Economy Incubation: We support entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises developing innovative solutions to today's social and environmental challenges. By strengthening their capacity and connecting them with the right partners, we help accelerate the emergence of economic models that serve both people and the planet.
  • Civil Society Strengthening: Strong civil society organisations are essential to democratic and equitable societies. We work alongside non-profits, grassroots movements and informal collectives to strengthen their organisational capacity, leadership and long-term sustainability so they can increase their influence and scale their impact.
  • Civic Engagement: Systemic change only happens when citizens become active participants. We design campaigns, communities and collective action initiatives that empower people to engage with societal challenges, shift public narratives and accelerate the adoption of solutions that improve lives and protect the planet.
  • Mindset Change: Stories shape societies. We collaborate with creators, influencers and thought leaders to develop compelling narratives that make complex issues accessible, inspire hope and encourage meaningful action. By changing how people understand today's challenges, we help create the conditions for lasting systems change.

Role Context: Building a media platform for the impact community in Southeast Asia

*WE ARE LOOKING TO HIRE TWO EDITORIAL OFFICERS *

Most people do not engage with impact-driven careers or take action on social and environmental issues, not because they do not care, but because these challenges often feel too vast, too complex, and too disconnected from their everyday lives. Many are also unaware of the inspiring solutions that already exist, or of the many ways they can contribute through their careers, civic engagement, or everyday choices.

At makesense, we believe media has the power to bridge this gap.

That is why we are rebuilding our social channels into something closer to a media that helps people better understand the defining challenges of our time, discover the individuals and organisations driving change across Southeast Asia, and feel informed, inspired, and empowered to take meaningful action.

That is a bigger shift than it sounds, so it is worth being specific about what we mean.

We want to explain the sector, not just celebrate it. We believe people deserve to understand how the impact ecosystem in Southeast Asia actually works. Who funds what. Which organisations are doing the difficult work and which are performing it. What is genuinely changing and what has stalled. That clarity is what lets someone decide where to put their energy, their time, or their next five years.

We want to be useful before we are inspiring. Feeling is where it starts, but it is not where it ends. We want to be the thing someone reads and then knows what to do on Monday, whether that is a job to apply for, an organisation to volunteer with, or a question worth asking their employer.

We want to go and find the story, not wait to be handed one. That means doing the research, building the sources, and asking the questions that get you past the press release. Some of what we publish will be quick. Some will take time. Both should tell people something they did not already know.

We are hiring two Editorial Officers to build this with us. One will cover careers in the impact economy. The other will cover the issues themselves, and how citizens can act on them.

Your mission

Whether you join makesense Asia or Jobs_that_makesense Asia, you will help transform ideas into stories that people actually want to watch, read and return to.

You will:

Find the story

  • Identify the stories, trends, and shifts worth covering across the impact ecosystem
  • Research independently. Build a network of sources, practitioners and partners you can go back to
  • Interview entrepreneurs, experts, partners and community members
  • Travel across Southeast Asia to report from events and produce field content

Produce it

  • Write the scripts, articles, and interview guides
  • Produce short-form video, carousels, and other visual formats for Instagram, LinkedIn and beyond
  • Design the visual assets aligned with our brand identity
  • Be one of the faces and voices of the organisation on camera

Build the publication

  • Set and build the editorial direction of one of our two publications. Adapt each story across Instagram, LinkedIn, our newsletter and blog
  • Support the promotion of makesense programmes, including calls for applications, when the story is worth telling. The publication serves the ecosystem, and our programmes are part of it.
  • Monitor performance and continuously test new editorial formats

Collaborate

  • Write creative briefs for teammates and external contributors
  • Advise colleagues on storytelling and content
  • Work with our programme, partnerships and communications teams so the reporting has access to what they know

Profile

While both positions require the same core skills: editorial thinking, storytelling, graphic visuals content production, and community engagement, they serve two distinct editorial missions:

  • Editorial Officer, Jobs_that_makesense Asia

Shape a media platform that helps people discover, navigate, and build meaningful careers in Southeast Asia's growing impact economy. Your content will spotlight purpose-driven organisations, emerging sectors, career pathways, and professionals creating positive change.

--> Under this role, you will report and be supported by Maren Marasigan, Jobs_that_makesense Communications Lead.

Some examples of the types of content we are looking to produce are:

  • interviews with impact practitioners

  • sector insights and trends

  • honest career advice ("the non-bullshit guide to impact careers")

  • employer stories, including what it is actually like to work there

  • concrete opportunities to learn and grow professionally

  • Editorial Officer , makesense Southeast Asia

Shape a media platform that helps citizens understand today's most pressing social and environmental challenges while showcasing local changemakers, community initiatives, volunteering opportunities, and ways to take civic action across Southeast Asia.

Under this role, you will report and be supported by Léa Klein, Asia Head of makesense.

Some examples of the types of content we are looking to produce are:

  • hopeful and constructive news from the region
  • inspiring stories of people creating change
  • practical opportunities for citizens to contribute to systems change
  • educational content that makes complex issues accessible
  • behind-the-scenes perspectives from the impact ecosystem

The editorial missions are different, but the ambition is the same: to create media that helps people better understand the world around them, and their role in changing it.

_Both roles will be expected to create editorial content across our Instagram, LinkedIn, newsletters, and blog (_graphic visuals, short videos, articles).

We're looking for (two) someone who…

  1. Thinks like a journalist. You naturally ask questions, investigate, research and look for meaningful angles rather than waiting for someone to tell you what to post.
  2. Is a storyteller. You know how to transform a complex topic into a story people genuinely care about.
  3. Can carry a story end to end and work independently. Research, write, storyboard, film, edit, publish. You do not need detailed instructions, and you are comfortable owning a piece from the first question to the final export.
  4. Loves being on camera. You're comfortable interviewing people, hosting videos and speaking publicly.
  5. Is excited by field reporting. Travelling across Southeast Asia to meet entrepreneurs, attend conferences and discover inspiring initiatives energizes you.
  6. Thrives in startups. Strategies evolve. Priorities change. You enjoy experimenting, learning and adapting rather than working from a fixed plan.
  7. Is deeply curious. You're eager to learn about climate, social innovation, international development and systems change. You enjoy meeting practitioners, asking thoughtful questions and constantly expanding your understanding of the impact sector.
  8. Is collaborative. You take feedback with openness and are willing to learn. You understand that building a strong brand matters is a collective effort and therefore must be open to others' insights.

What are the skills and experiences we are looking for?

Required experience

  • 2–3 years of experience in content creation, editorial media, communications or storytelling (internships included)
  • Previous experience working in a startup, NGO, social enterprise or media organization
  • Experience creating content beyond documenting organizational activities, you have built narratives that educate, inspire or inform
  • Strong portfolio showcasing storytelling, graphic design work and short-form videos featuring yourself on camera
  • Experience conducting interviews
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Comfortable speaking in public and representing an organisation
  • Experience travelling internationally and excited to travel frequently across Southeast Asia

Technical skills

  • Research and sourcing
  • Editorial writing and scriptwriting

  • Short-form video production
  • Graphic design for digital media
