What is makesense?

makesense is an international organisation working to accelerate just and equitable transitions across society.

We believe that addressing today's biggest social and environmental challenges, from climate change and biodiversity loss to growing inequalities, requires more than technological innovation. It requires people, organisations and institutions to work together to imagine, build and adopt new ways of living, working and collaborating.

Since 2010, makesense has been strengthening the capacity of citizens, civil society organisations, entrepreneurs, businesses and public institutions to become active contributors to these transitions. Today, our global team of more than 120 employees works across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Southeast Asia to design and implement programmes that create lasting systemic change.

In Southeast Asia, our mission is simple: to help build the new models our societies need while enabling more people to become part of the solution.

We do this through five complementary areas of work:

  • Impact Workforce Development: We help students, professionals and workers, including those from underserved communities, access meaningful careers that contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future. Through career platforms, learning programmes and employer partnerships, we are building the region's impact workforce.
  • Just Economy Incubation: We support entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises developing innovative solutions to today's social and environmental challenges. By strengthening their capacity and connecting them with the right partners, we help accelerate the emergence of economic models that serve both people and the planet.
  • Civil Society Strengthening: Strong civil society organisations are essential to democratic and equitable societies. We work alongside non-profits, grassroots movements and informal collectives to strengthen their organisational capacity, leadership and long-term sustainability so they can increase their influence and scale their impact.
  • Civic Engagement: Systemic change only happens when citizens become active participants. We design campaigns, communities and collective action initiatives that empower people to engage with societal challenges, shift public narratives and accelerate the adoption of solutions that improve lives and protect the planet.
  • Mindset Change: Stories shape societies. We collaborate with creators, influencers and thought leaders to develop compelling narratives that make complex issues accessible, inspire hope and encourage meaningful action. By changing how people understand today's challenges, we help create the conditions for lasting systems change.

Role Context: Lead and deliver makesense's Civic Engagement activities in Indonesia

Over the past ten years, makesense has become one of the leading organisations in Southeast Asia working at the intersection of civic engagement, narrative change, and the energy transition. Together with civil society organisations, data analysts, and influential community leaders, we have developed innovative approaches that help citizens better understand energy transition challenges, engage in public conversations, and support policies that enable a faster and more equitable transition.

As part of our regional expansion, Indonesia has become one of our strategic priorities. With one of the world's largest digital populations, a rapidly growing renewable energy and electric vehicle ecosystem, and an active civil society landscape, the country represents an incredible opportunity to accelerate citizen engagement around the energy transition.

Today, our work in Indonesia revolves around two flagship initiatives:

The Good Chat

The Good Chat is a regional fellowship for social media creators and Facebook community leaders whose audiences are primarily urban adults aged 20–40. Rather than asking creators to become climate experts, we help them translate energy transition issues into stories that resonate with their own communities and everyday realities. Through coaching, social listening, strategic partnerships with civil society organisations, and community-building, the programme strengthens new public narratives while helping bridge citizen engagement with evidence-based policy advocacy.

Renewable Energy Digital Consumer Communities Research Pilot

Building on the success of our Solar Energy Consumer Communities research in the Philippines, we are launching a new research pilot in Indonesia to better understand how renewable energy communities on platform such as Facebook or whatsapp can become influential civic actors supporting the country's energy transition.

Working alongside local partners, researchers, and community leaders, this pilot aims to identify the motivations, barriers, and engagement models that enable EV communities to contribute not only to the adoption of clean mobility but also to public conversations and policy change around sustainable transportation and renewable energy.

Profile

Why this role matters

We are entering an exciting new phase of growth in Indonesia.

The Good Chat will continue expanding its partnerships with Indonesian creators, online communities, and civil society organisations to strengthen public engagement around the energy transition.

At the same time, we are launching our first Electric Vehicle Consumer Communities Research Pilot to explore how one of Indonesia's fastest-growing citizen movements can contribute to accelerating cleaner mobility and broader energy transition policies.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys combining programme management, community building, research coordination, and partnership development. You will become the operational lead for makesense's civic engagement work in Indonesia while contributing to the growth of our regional methodologies and long-term country strategy.

You will thrive in this role if you have experience in:

  • Designing and coordinating community-based programmes or fellowships.
  • Civic engagement, community organising, campaigning, advocacy, or social innovation.
  • Building trusted relationships with creators, online communities, and civil society organisations.
  • Facilitating workshops, community conversations, and learning experiences.
  • Coordinating research projects or multi-stakeholder initiatives.

Your role

You will lead the implementation of makesense's civic engagement programmes in Indonesia, with a particular focus on:

  • Leading the operational coordination of The Good Chat Indonesia fellowship.
  • Identifying, recruiting, and supporting high-potential fellows throughout their learning journey (final participant selection will be made by Jib Aksorndee).
  • Providing weekly coaching and follow-up to fellows throughout the programme.
  • Coordinating fellowship workshops, networking events, learning sessions, and community activities.
  • Leading the implementation of the Electric Vehicle Consumer Communities Research Pilot in collaboration with local partners and researchers.
  • Building relationships with Indonesian civil society organisations, creators, EV communities, and ecosystem partners.
  • Acting as the primary point of contact for makesense's civic engagement activities in Indonesia.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of our methodologies and sharing learnings with the regional Civic Engagement team.
