What is makesense?

makesense is an international organisation working to accelerate just and equitable transitions across society.

We believe that addressing today’s biggest social and environmental challenges, from climate change and biodiversity loss to growing inequalities, requires more than technological innovation. It requires people, organisations and institutions to work together to imagine, build and adopt new ways of living, working and collaborating.

Since 2010, makesense has been strengthening the capacity of citizens, civil society organisations, entrepreneurs, businesses and public institutions to become active contributors to these transitions. Today, our global team of more than 120 employees works across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Southeast Asia to design and implement programmes that create lasting systemic change.

In Southeast Asia, our mission is simple: to help build the new models our societies need while enabling more people to become part of the solution.

We do this through five complementary areas of work:

  • Impact Workforce Development: We help students, professionals and workers, including those from underserved communities, access meaningful careers that contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future. Through career platforms, learning programmes and employer partnerships, we are building the region’s impact workforce.
  • Just Economy Incubation: We support entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises developing innovative solutions to today’s social and environmental challenges. By strengthening their capacity and connecting them with the right partners, we help accelerate the emergence of economic models that serve both people and the planet.
  • Civil Society Strengthening: Strong civil society organisations are essential to democratic and equitable societies. We work alongside non-profits, grassroots movements and informal collectives to strengthen their organisational capacity, leadership and long-term sustainability so they can increase their influence and scale their impact.
  • Civic Engagement: Systemic change only happens when citizens become active participants. We design campaigns, communities and collective action initiatives that empower people to engage with societal challenges, shift public narratives and accelerate the adoption of solutions that improve lives and protect the planet.
  • Mindset Change: Stories influence societies. We collaborate with creators, influencers and thought leaders to develop compelling narratives that make complex issues accessible, inspire hope and encourage meaningful action. By changing how people understand today’s challenges, we help create the conditions for lasting systems change.

About the role

Help us understand how online conversations can drive meaningful civic engagement and accelerate the energy transition in Southeast Asia.

Over the past ten years, makesense in Asia has become one of the leading organisations in Southeast Asia working at the intersection of civic engagement, narrative change and the energy transition.

Together with civil society organisations, think tanks and influential community leaders, we have developed innovative approaches that help citizens better understand energy transition challenges, engage in public conversations and support policies that enable a faster and more equitable transition.

Today, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines are strategic priorities for our civic engagement work. These countries have some of the world’s most active digital populations, rapidly growing renewable energy and electric vehicle ecosystems, and vibrant civil society landscapes.

But to strengthen public engagement, we need to better understand what people are already talking about online, what motivates them, what concerns them and how their opinions evolve over time.

This is where you come in.

We are looking for a Social Listening & Data Insights Lead to lead the collection, analysis and interpretation of social media data across our civic engagement programmes.

Your role will go beyond tracking reach and engagement. You will help us understand which narratives resonate with different audiences, how online communities respond to energy transition issues, and whether our campaigns are contributing to meaningful shifts in public conversations.

You will work closely with our regional Civic Engagement team to turn data into actionable insights that inform campaign strategies, support community leaders and strengthen the effectiveness of our work.

The two programmes you will primarily support

1. The Good Chat – Building new narratives around the energy transition

The Good Chat is a regional fellowship for social media creators and Facebook community leaders whose audiences are primarily urban adults aged 20–40.

Rather than asking creators to become climate experts, we help them translate energy transition issues into stories that resonate with their own communities and everyday realities.

Through coaching, social listening, strategic partnerships with civil society organisations and community-building, the programme strengthens new public narratives while connecting citizen engagement with evidence-based policy advocacy.

As our Social Listening & Data Insights Lead, you will help us understand how these narratives perform, how audiences respond to them and how creators can adapt their content to generate deeper engagement and more meaningful conversations.

2. Renewable Energy Digital Consumer Communities – Research & Incubation

Building on our Solar Energy Consumer Communities research in the Philippines, we are expanding our work with digital consumer communities across two countries.

In the Philippines, we are working with more than four renewable energy consumer community administrators to help them activate and mobilise their communities in support of energy transition policies.

In Indonesia, we are mapping the landscape of renewable energy communities on platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp to understand how these groups can become influential civic actors supporting the energy transition.

Together with local partners, researchers and community leaders, we aim to identify the motivations, barriers and engagement models that enable these communities to contribute not only to the adoption of clean energy and mobility solutions, but also to public conversations and policy change.

Your role will be to analyse these online conversations, identify emerging trends and help us understand which communities and issues offer the greatest potential for meaningful civic engagement.

Your responsibilities

Your work will be organised around three complementary areas.

1. Social listening and digital community research

Understand what people are talking about, what drives their opinions and how online conversations evolve.

  • Design and implement social listening frameworks to monitor online conversations related to renewable energy, electric mobility and the energy transition.
  • Identify emerging narratives, recurring concerns, audience motivations and barriers to engagement across different online communities.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis of social media conversations, including posts, comments, questions and audience interactions.
  • Map and analyse digital communities to identify their interests, levels of activity, influence and potential to contribute to civic engagement.
  • In Indonesia, support the mapping of renewable energy communities, identify 30 priority groups and collect and analyse six months of available data.
  • In the Philippines, conduct in-depth analysis of more than four renewable energy consumer communities, with a focus on motivations, affordability concerns, implementation challenges and opportunities for collective action.
  • Translate these findings into practical recommendations that inform our community engagement and campaign strategies.

2. Campaign monitoring, performance analysis and narrative insights

Help us understand what works, why it works and how we can strengthen the impact of our campaigns.

  • Design and implement a campaign measurement framework combining quantitative performance indicators with qualitative indicators of narrative change.
  • Establish pre-campaign benchmarks and conduct two rounds of post-campaign analysis for more than 30 priority creators and community leaders.
  • Analyse campaign performance across a wider network of more than 50 creators, civil society organisations and online communities.
  • Monitor reach, engagement, audience interactions and narrative performance across participating accounts.
  • Analyse audience comments and questions to identify signals of trust, interest, changing perceptions and willingness to act.
  • Combine social media data with qualitative feedback from Fellows, alumni, community leaders and civil society partners.
  • Assess whether coordinated campaigns have contributed to increasing the visibility, credibility and engagement around priority energy transition issues.
  • Identify successful content formats, narratives and engagement approaches, and provide recommendations to improve future campaigns.

3. Data visualisation, reporting and strategic insights

Turn complex data into clear insights that teams, creators and partners can understand and act on.

  • Design and maintain an internal dashboard that consolidates reach, engagement and other relevant performance indicators across participating creators, civil society organisations and online communities.
  • Develop clear and accessible data visualisations that allow the team to monitor progress, compare performance and identify emerging trends.
  • Produce structured research reports and campaign performance analyses combining quantitative findings with qualitative insights.
  • Translate complex datasets into clear conclusions, practical recommendations and compelling presentations for non-technical audiences.
  • Present findings to the regional Civic Engagement team and contribute to discussions on campaign strategy and programme improvement.
  • Support creators, community leaders and colleagues in understanding their performance data and identifying opportunities to strengthen their content and engagement approaches.
  • Maintain high standards of data quality, consistency and documentation across all research and monitoring activities.
  • Contribute to strengthening makesense’s internal methodologies for social listening, narrative analysis and campaign evaluation.

You will work closely with and report to Jib Aksorndee and collaborate with the wider regional Civic Engagement team.

Who are we looking for?

  • Demonstrated experience analysing both qualitative and quantitative social media data.
  • Experience designing monitoring frameworks, conducting research and translating findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Experience working with online communities, content creators, digital campaigns or social media ecosystems.
  • Experience using social listening and social media analytics tools.
  • Experience developing dashboards, visualisations or structured analytical reports.
  • Experience working across different geographic and cultural contexts is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with Southeast Asia’s digital ecosystems, climate action, sustainability or civic engagement is highly desirable.

  • Ability to design research methodologies that combine quantitative indicators with qualitative interpretation.
  • Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail, with the ability to identify meaningful trends and patterns in complex datasets.

Cultural curiosity and understanding of online communities

  • Genuine curiosity about the cultures, communities and social dynamics shaping Southeast Asia.
  • Strong understanding of social media platforms, online communities, creator ecosystems and evolving digital trends.
  • Ability to interpret online conversations within their social and cultural contexts rather than relying only on numerical indicators.

Communication and collaboration

  • Excellent ability to translate technical findings into accessible insights for colleagues, creators and partners.
  • Confidence presenting research findings and facilitating discussions around data and campaign performance.

  • Alignment with makesense’s mission and belief in citizen-led systems change.
  • Curious, proactive and comfortable working independently.
  • Collaborative and comfortable working in a multicultural, remote-first team.
  • Motivated by the opportunity to use data not simply to measure performance, but to strengthen meaningful civic action.
