What is makesense?

makesense is an international organisation working to accelerate just and equitable transitions across society.

We believe that addressing today's biggest social and environmental challenges, from climate change and biodiversity loss to growing inequalities, requires more than technological innovation. It requires people, organisations and institutions to work together to imagine, build and adopt new ways of living, working and collaborating.

Since 2010, makesense has been strengthening the capacity of citizens, civil society organisations, entrepreneurs, businesses and public institutions to become active contributors to these transitions. Today, our global team of more than 120 employees works across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Southeast Asia to design and implement programmes that create lasting systemic change.

In Southeast Asia, our mission is simple: to help build the new models our societies need while enabling more people to become part of the solution.

We do this through five complementary areas of work:

  • Impact Workforce Development: We help students, professionals and workers, including those from underserved communities, access meaningful careers that contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future. Through career platforms, learning programmes and employer partnerships, we are building the region's impact workforce.
  • Just Economy Incubation: We support entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises developing innovative solutions to today's social and environmental challenges. By strengthening their capacity and connecting them with the right partners, we help accelerate the emergence of economic models that serve both people and the planet.
  • Civil Society Strengthening: Strong civil society organisations are essential to democratic and equitable societies. We work alongside non-profits, grassroots movements and informal collectives to strengthen their organisational capacity, leadership and long-term sustainability so they can increase their influence and scale their impact.
  • Civic Engagement: Systemic change only happens when citizens become active participants. We design campaigns, communities and collective action initiatives that empower people to engage with societal challenges, shift public narratives and accelerate the adoption of solutions that improve lives and protect the planet.
  • Mindset Change: Stories shape societies. We collaborate with creators, influencers and thought leaders to develop compelling narratives that make complex issues accessible, inspire hope and encourage meaningful action. By changing how people understand today's challenges, we help create the conditions for lasting systems change.

Role Context – Lead and Deliver Civic Engagement Programmes Across Southeast Asia

Over the past three years, makesense has become one of the leading organisations in Southeast Asia working at the intersection of civic engagement, narrative change, and the energy transition.

Together with civil society organisations, data analysts, and influential community leaders, we have developed innovative approaches that help citizens better understand energy transition challenges, engage in public conversations, and support policies that enable a faster and more equitable transition.

Today, our civic engagement portfolio is primarily led by Jib Aksorndee and Léa Klein, with the support of specialised consultants, and revolves around two flagship programmes:

  • The Good Chat

The Good Chat is a regional fellowship for social media creators and Facebook community leaders whose audiences are primarily urban adults aged 20-40. Rather than asking creators to become climate experts, we help them translate energy transition issues into stories that resonate with their own communities and everyday realities. Through coaching, social listening, strategic partnerships with civil society organisations, and community-building, the programme strengthens new public narratives while helping bridge citizen engagement with evidence-based policy advocacy.

  • Solar Energy Consumer Communities Incubation Programme

Following a successful research pilot with ten Facebook communities of solar energy consumers in the Philippines, we identified the motivations, barriers, and engagement models that enable solar consumers to become stronger advocates for clean energy policies. Building on these insights, we have designed a first-of-its-kind incubation programme that supports online communities in becoming influential civic actors capable of contributing to policy conversations and accelerating the adoption of solar energy.

Why this role matters

We are now entering an exciting scale-up phase.

  • The Good Chat is expanding its partnerships with leading civil society organisations across the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia. As energy affordability and energy security become increasingly important public concerns, we aim to engage more influential voices and mobilise larger communities around solutions that accelerate the adoption of renewable energy.
  • The Solar Energy Consumer Communities Incubation Programme is moving from research to implementation. We will launch the first full incubation programme in the Philippines while simultaneously piloting a new research phase in Indonesia to inform future regional expansion.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys combining systems thinking with hands-on programme delivery. While you will contribute to programme strategy and continuous improvement, your primary responsibility will be to design and facilitate exceptional learning experiences that enable citizens and community leaders to become effective changemakers.

You will thrive in this role if you have experience in:

  • Designing and facilitating systems-change or social innovation programmes.
  • Civic engagement, community organising, campaigning, or advocacy.
  • Creating engaging learning curriculums in both online and in-person settings.
  • Facilitating workshops and learning journeys that inspire action.
  • Building trusted relationships with diverse stakeholders and communities.
