What is makesense?

makesense is an international organisation working to accelerate just and equitable transitions across society.

We believe that addressing today's biggest social and environmental challenges, from climate change and biodiversity loss to growing inequalities, requires more than technological innovation. It requires people, organisations and institutions to work together to imagine, build and adopt new ways of living, working and collaborating.

Since 2010, makesense has been strengthening the capacity of citizens, civil society organisations, entrepreneurs, businesses and public institutions to become active contributors to these transitions. Today, our global team of more than 120 employees works across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Southeast Asia to design and implement programmes that create lasting systemic change.

In Southeast Asia, our mission is simple: to help build the new models our societies need while enabling more people to become part of the solution.

We do this through five complementary areas of work:

  • Impact Workforce Development: We help students, professionals and workers, including those from underserved communities, access meaningful careers that contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future. Through career platforms, learning programmes and employer partnerships, we are building the region's impact workforce.
  • Just Economy Incubation: We support entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises developing innovative solutions to today's social and environmental challenges. By strengthening their capacity and connecting them with the right partners, we help accelerate the emergence of economic models that serve both people and the planet.
  • Civil Society Strengthening: Strong civil society organisations are essential to democratic and equitable societies. We work alongside non-profits, grassroots movements and informal collectives to strengthen their organisational capacity, leadership and long-term sustainability so they can increase their influence and scale their impact.
  • Civic Engagement: Systemic change only happens when citizens become active participants. We design campaigns, communities and collective action initiatives that empower people to engage with societal challenges, shift public narratives and accelerate the adoption of solutions that improve lives and protect the planet.
  • Mindset Change: Stories shape societies. We collaborate with creators, influencers and thought leaders to develop compelling narratives that make complex issues accessible, inspire hope and encourage meaningful action. By changing how people understand today's challenges, we help create the conditions for lasting systems change.

Role Context: Build Citizen Movements for the Energy Transition Across Southeast Asia

Over the past three years, makesense has built one of Southeast Asia's leading civic engagement initiatives for the energy transition. Through fellowships, online communities, and partnerships with civil society organisations, we have helped thousands of citizens better understand renewable energy, engage in public conversations, and support policies that accelerate a just transition.

Today, we are entering a new phase.

While we have invested heavily in strengthening the capacity of creators, online communities, and grassroots leaders, we now want to significantly increase the number of citizens taking meaningful action.

This means designing and launching public campaigns that make complex energy issues understandable, actionable, and impossible to ignore.

From encouraging households to adopt rooftop solar, to mobilising citizens around key energy policies, to supporting our network of fellows and community leaders in designing their own campaigns, we believe strategic campaigning can become one of the strongest levers for accelerating the energy transition in Southeast Asia.

Why does this role matter? You won't simply execute campaigns, you will help build our regional campaigning practice from the ground up.

Working closely with the Civic Engagement Lead and our SouthEast Asia coordinator, our communications team, civil society partners, creators and grassroots communities, you will imagine, design and deliver digital-first campaigns capable of reaching millions of citizens across the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia.

You will also become the campaigning coach for our ecosystem, helping fellows, incubated communities and partner organisations strengthen their own mobilisation strategies.

If you love turning ideas into movements, online engagement into real-world action, and social media into a tool for systems change, this role is for you.

Your role

You will lead the design and implementation of makesense Asia's direct civic engagement campaigns across Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on:

  • Designing and executing regional digital campaigns that mobilise citizens around the energy transition.
  • Creating compelling social media campaigns, visual assets and storytelling content that inspire participation.
  • Developing campaign strategies grounded in behavioural insights, social listening and audience research.
  • Supporting The Good Chat Fellows in designing and amplifying their own civic engagement campaigns.
  • Coaching participants of the Solar Energy Consumer Communities Incubation Programme on campaign design and community mobilisation.
  • Working closely with civil society organisations to align public mobilisation efforts with advocacy priorities.
  • Monitoring campaign performance and continuously improving campaign strategies based on audience engagement and learning.
  • Contributing to the growth of makesense Asia's campaigning methodologies and tools.
