Working with: government (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, SEC), banks, industry associations

Major causes of deforestation in Southeast Asia include unsustainable production of agricultural and forest commodities and infrastructure development. Aside from producers, buyers, consumers and government, the financial sector is one of the most powerful actors to stimulate sustainable commodity production as well as infrastructure development through its financial leverage and capital allocation decisions.

Southeast Asia contains some of the world's most biodiverse tropical forests, but has the fastest rates of forest loss. Mainly due to the production of palm oil, pulp and paper, rubber, as well as infrastructure projects, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Myanmar will lose most of their native forests and biodiversity within 20 years if business practices do not change. The finance sector offers a huge potential to help safeguard forests and biodiversity by directing investments to sustainable business models.

WWF is implementing a Project, Taking Deforestation out of Banking Portfolios, that aims to reduce negative impacts of business-as-usual financing and to support the integration of Environmental and Social (E&S) safeguards, including deforestation-free criteria, among Philippine financial institutions and financial market actors. It will provide sector specific guidance to financial institutions, e.g. review, improvement, and development, of existing and new financial products.
